ABC7 News reporter Luz Pena's first stop for Oscar Fashion was Oakland School for the Arts

So proud of our very own Fashion Design chair, Stephanie Verrieres, for her highlight on ABC7 news yesterday as they showcased her @verrieres.sako dress designs! As a special treat, the segment also covered OSA Middle School Fashion design students hard at work in the OSA Fashion classroom where all the magic happens! During the interview, ABC Reporter Luz Pena had the chance to try on several of Verrieres Sako dresses to wear on the red carpet for the Oscars this weekend. What a thrill!

About this event

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has just chosen one of Verrieres & Sako's couture gowns for its permanent costume collection. Before it is spirited away, TAC members have a chance to see it up close and meet the designers in the unique Store House space at Fort Mason Center.
This Oakland-based fashion label, founded by Stephanie Verrieres and Kimie Sako in 2008, has been making waves with their innovative approach to design. They have coined the term "cutting-edge basic" to describe their day-to-evening wardrobe collections that feature luxurious techniques, detailing, and silhouettes typically found in high-end fashion translated into effortless, wearable pieces.
Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes display of some of Verrieres & Sako's meticulously created ready-to-wear, costume designs and evening gowns, including the one headed for the SFMFA. Discover the inspiration behind these creations and the stories they hold. The designers will discuss their fabric manipulation techniques for creating the striking three dimensional designs they are known for. Stephanie and Kimie will trace their path from pattern to production, and the hurdles of sourcing unique textiles and overcoming challenges producing high-end fashion.

Introduction by Laura Camerlengo, curator in charge of Costume and Textile Arts at Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Discussion moderated by Zoe Hong, fashion designer, illustrator and teacher.

Following the presentation there will be a brief reception to meet Stephanie and Kimie and learn more about their work.

We are particularly grateful to Fort Mason Center for the Arts for making this event so special.

Excerpt:
Jade Williams, an Oakland School for the Arts fashion design student, carefully crisscrossed each strand of hair until the long braid was finished. Turquoise, white and yellow beads were added until the dark mane was filled with decoration, making a gentle clattering sound as they struck together.

It was the high school freshman’s first time styling a horse, and the animal was surprisingly patient during the hour-long process.

“They’re really well behaved,” Linda Ricciardi, the school’s fashion design chair, said of the three horses her students were grooming, dressing and painting on Friday in a vacant lot above San Francisco’s Sunnydale neighborhood. “We’re excited to be a part of this, it’s been something positive the students have been looking forward to all month since Bri approached us with the project.”
